It was 1982 with a heart full of determination, when at the age of fifteen, John “Booper” Bare strapped into a race car for the first time at the historic Log Cabin Speedway in Basset, Virginia. Today, it is that same determination and desire that drives Booper to be the best he can possibly be not only when in his race car, but also in business and in life.
Twenty eight years later Booper Bare Racing is still headquartered in Rockbridge Baths, Virginia along the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Born the son of legendary racer Tommy Bare, Booper knew from an early age that racing was going to play a major role throughout his life. The elder Bare won over 200 features during his illustrious career while playing mentor and helping to lay the ground work that has made Booper Bare one of the East Coast’s most respected racers today. It was during those early years that Booper learned from his father, that the hard work in the shop will pay off on the track.
Through determination and hard work, from that first race at the wheel of a Semi Late, Booper has honed his craft into the talented diver he is today. In 1986 after 4 years in the Semi late, which produced numerous wins and three Track Championships, Booper made the switch to Super Late Model Racing. Booper has seen many checkered flags throughout his illustrious career as he has raced from New York to Florida and every State in between. At last count Booper Bare has taken the checkered flag at over seventeen different speedways up and down the East Coast. Booper Bare has raced in the sports biggest races including being a 3 time World 100 starter at the famed Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. The World 100 boasts car counts in the 200+ range for Dirt Late Model’s most prestigious race of the year that has seen many great drivers spend their careers without qualifying for this big race. On July 24, 2009 Booper Bare parked his car in Potomac Speedway’s victory lane for his 50th career feature win at the Budd’s Creek, Maryland race track. To be the all time career winner with 50 wins at just one speedway is a record that Booper is very proud yet humbled about.
As a new decade dawns, Booper Bare has amassed well over 200 feature wins and numerous track champions throughout his career that is showing no signs of slowing down. Yet his best attribute might be the way he presents himself outside of the race car. He has earned the respect of track owners and fellow competitors alike when his famed #00 rolls onto a race track for competition. His reputation has also garnered many of the speedway’s “Most Popular Driver” awards throughout his career. After the races you can find Booper talking to fans of all ages and signing autographs well after the checkered flag has fallen. With the support of his devoted family, hard working crew and legions of fans that follow him up and down the highways each season Booper continues to be one of the true ambassadors for the sport of Super Late Model racing.
